PSL 2026/27 Season Start Date Revealed

As the 2025/26 domestic season wraps up this Saturday with a simultaneous final-day kickoff, Sportswire can exclusively reveal that the Premier Soccer League (PSL) is planning an unusually early start for the 2026/27 campaign to beat a heavily congested international calendar.

The Betway Premiership is provisionally scheduled to fire into life on 1 August, with the MTN8 quarterfinals taking place just one week later.

This marks a radical departure from traditional South African football structures, which historically use the top-eight knockout competition as the season curtain-raiser before league fixtures commence.

Navigating the Continental Traffic Jam

The early kickoff is a proactive move by the PSL to avoid the severe scheduling bottlenecks that plagued the current 2025/26 season. This season had to pause and stretch the domestic calendar to accommodate the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) in Morocco, which ran from December 2025 through January 2026.

Fortunately, the league will breathe a bit easier next term. The 2027 AFCON—co-hosted by Kenya, Uganda, and Tanzania under the historic “PAMOJA” banner—is locked in for June and July 2027.

This winter scheduling gives the PSL a clear run to finish domestic business on time, provided they can navigate a rapid-fire qualification phase.

The qualifiers for the 2027 tournament begin this coming September and will conclude swiftly in March 2027.

FIFA International Window Calendar (2026/27)

  • Matchdays 1 & 2: 21 September to 6 October 6, 2026
  • Matchdays 3 & 4: 9 November to 17 November, 2026
  • Matchdays 5 & 6: 22 March to 30 March, 2027

Bafana Bafana’s Road to East Africa

The draw conducted by the Confederation of African Football (CAF) placed Bafana Bafana in a Group D alongside Guinea, Eritrea, and tournament co-hosts Kenya.

The group carries a fascinating narrative. Kenya is currently spearheaded by Bafana Bafana’s all-time top goalscorer, Benni McCarthy.

Because Kenya automatically qualifies as a PAMOJA co-host, only one other nation from Group D will earn a ticket to the finals, significantly raising the stakes for Hugo Broos’ men.

The AFL Factor: Adding to the calendar complexity, CAF President Patrice Motsepe recently confirmed a strong likelihood that the African Football League (AFL) will return to the continent this season.

The PSL will once again have to wait for official dates from Cairo, including the CAF Champions League and CAF Confederation Cup dates, before finalizing its fixtures.

Despite immense domestic fixture resistance in the past, the PSL previously sanctioned Mamelodi Sundowns’ participation in the inaugural eight-team pilot tournament back in 2023, where a Rulani Mokwena-led side went all the way to lift the crown. Local fans will be watching closely to see how the league balances these overlapping continental demands.
