Star Defender Abruptly Quits Chippa Despite Remaining Contract

Chippa United left-back Malebogo Modise has officially confirmed his departure from the club, bringing an abrupt end to his tenure with the Chilli Boys.

Modise has parted ways with the Eastern Cape outfit despite having a year left on his contract. While the exact reasons behind his premature exit remain undisclosed, the Mafikeng-born defender is reportedly looking for a fresh challenge.

In a parting statement to the club’s supporters, Modise noted: “Dear Chilli Boys Family, thank you for everything.”

A Mainstay in a Chaotic Campaign

The 27-year-old was a crucial figure for Chippa last season, starting 31 matches across all competitions (including 29 in the league).

His defensive consistency helped the Chilli Boys survive the relegation dogfight to finish 11th in the Betway Premiership under head coach Brandon Truter.

Modise’s dependability was particularly impressive given the club’s notoriously chaotic revolving door for technical staff. Truter was remarkably the seventh coach to take charge of the team last season alone. The others who occupied the hot seat during the campaign included Sinethemba Badela, Musa Nyatama, Morgan Mammila, Luc Eymael, Vusi Vilakazi, and Nkosikhona Dikela.

Truter, a seasoned PSL journeyman, brought much-needed stability to the camp, drawing on his extensive top-flight experience with previous stints at Royal AM, Moroka Swallows, Richards Bay, All Stars, AmaZulu, Sekhukhune United, and Upington City.

What Lies Ahead

Modise’s exit signals the start of what is expected to be a highly active off-season transfer window for Chippa United.

Since joining the Chilli Boys ahead of the 2023/24 season—initially arriving on loan from Mamelodi Sundowns before making the move permanent—Modise racked up 71 appearances in all competitions, registering one goal and four assists.

It remains to be seen where the talented full-back will land next as clubs begin squad block planning for the upcoming season.
