Tazmin Brits Destroys Netherlands With Brutal Maiden T20I Ton To Supercharge Proteas’ World Cup Push

It was a consummate professional performance from the Proteas Women as they swept aside the Netherlands by 88 runs in Bristol, a victory that lifted their net run rate into positive territory with one group-stage match remaining.

Momentum continues to build for South Africa as they gather pace in their push for a place in the semi-finals. Leading the charge was Tazmin Brits, who blazed her way to a maiden T20I century, powering the Proteas to their second-highest total in the format.

Despite losing the toss, South Africa were sent in to bat by the Netherlands, a decision that gave the Proteas the opportunity to post a commanding total while boosting their net run rate. The side was unchanged from the team that secured a crucial victory over India.

Laura Wolvaardt and Tazmin Brits made a relatively subdued start before shifting through the gears, plundering 41 runs across overs four, five and six. Leg-spinner Silver Siegers bore the brunt of the assault, conceding 17 runs in her first over before finishing with expensive figures of 0/60 from her four overs.

Wolvaardt, South Africa’s premier batter, has endured a lean run by her lofty standards, and this innings followed a similar pattern as she initially struggled to find fluency. The introduction of off-spinner Caroline de Lange briefly stemmed the Proteas’ momentum, with the Dutch bowler conceding just nine runs in her opening two overs to apply the brakes on the growing partnership.

Despite that brief slowdown, South Africa still reached 94 without loss after 10 overs, providing the ideal platform to accelerate with all 10 wickets intact as they chased the imposing total required to improve their net run rate.

The opening partnership, worth 121 runs — the pair’s highest together in T20Is — was eventually broken when Wolvaardt chased a wide delivery and could only edge behind to wicketkeeper-captain Babette de Leede, leaving for a valuable 45.

Annerie Dercksen arrived at the crease and began cautiously before exploding into life, smashing 37 not out from just 16 deliveries at a remarkable strike rate of 231. Brits, meanwhile, paced her innings superbly while maintaining her natural attacking style, carrying her bat through for a magnificent unbeaten 114 from 69 balls, an innings featuring 15 fours and three sixes.

The pair added an unbeaten 87 runs from just 39 deliveries as South Africa hammered 50 runs from the final three overs, including 23 off Siegers’ penultimate over, which featured three towering sixes.

The Proteas may have expected the Dutch to crumble under the pressure of the chase, but the visitors responded with determination as openers Phebe Molkenboer and Sanya Khurana shared a 58-run opening partnership.

However, maintaining the required run rate was always going to prove difficult. Khurana, who had already been dropped on three, eventually fell to Chloe Tryon, giving South Africa the breakthrough they needed.

Sterre Kalis mounted a spirited resistance, but her run-a-ball approach was never likely to trouble the Proteas. Once Shabnim Ismail removed her, Molkenboer departed soon afterwards, triggering an emphatic Dutch collapse.

With just 15 balls remaining, the Netherlands lost six wickets for only 10 runs, with Ayabonga Khaka leading the charge. The experienced seamer claimed three wickets in the final over to complete the rout.

The dramatic collapse sealed an emphatic 88-run victory for South Africa, significantly boosting their net run rate and delivering exactly the result they had set out to achieve.
