Former Orlando Pirates Coach Passes Away

Orlando Pirates have expressed their deep sadness following the passing of former head coach Roy Barreto.
According to reports, Barreto passed away at the age of 72 after a battle with illness.
His wife, Fazi Barreto, confirmed that he died peacefully on Monday evening, 29 June, in Portugal.
News of his passing, which was confirmed on Tuesday, 30 June, has prompted widespread tributes from football clubs and organizations across South Africa and Zimbabwe, with many remembering his immense contributions to the game.
This has led the Buccaneers to pay their own heartfelt tribute to Barreto, who famously guided the club to the PSL league title during the 2002/03 season.
He was also an integral part of the technical team when Orlando Pirates made history by winning the CAF Champions League in 1995, defeating ASEC Mimosas 3-2 on aggregate.
“Orlando Pirates is saddened by the passing of our former coach, Roy Barreto. His contribution to the club’s history and success will forever be remembered,” the club said in an official statement. “We extend our heartfelt condolences to his family, friends, and the entire football fraternity during this difficult time. May his soul rest in peace.”
Before making his mark in the Premier Soccer League (PSL), Barreto established himself as one of Zimbabwe’s most respected football tacticians. He also enjoyed coaching spells in Namibia before later retiring to Portugal.
The Zimbabwe Football Association (ZIFA) has also expressed its profound sadness over Barreto’s passing.
