Cape Town City Sign Former Pirates Midfielder

Cape Town City have completed the signing of veteran midfielder Thabang Monare on a free transfer following his departure from Sekhukhune United.

The 36-year-old former Orlando Pirates star joins the Motsepe Foundation Championship side to anchor their promotional charge under new head coach Andries Ulderink, following City’s agonizing miss in the recent PSL promotion playoffs.

Monare leaves Sekhukhune United after a robust two-season stint for the Limpopo side. During his time with Babina Noko, the experienced campaigner featured in 58 matches across all competitions, contributing three goals and two assists.

He moved to Sekhukhune from Pirates, capping a trophy-laden four-year spell with the Soweto Giants between 2020 and 2024. Monare made 93 appearances for the Buccaneers, netting one goal and providing two assists.

City hope Monare’s veteran presence stabilizes a squad that fell short in last season’s promotion playoffs. After finishing runners-up in the Motsepe Foundation Championship, City lost the decisive playoff battle to newly promoted Milford FC, who claimed a spot in the Betway Premiership instead.

The veteran midfielder brings crucial championship pedigree to a rebuilding squad. Monare slots into a side featuring the likes of Parsley Fielies and Marcelo Suárez as they look to execute Ulderink’s tactical vision for the upcoming campaign.
