Mosimane Confirms Bafana Talks As Broos’ Contract Nears The End
Veteran South African coach Pitso Mosimane has confirmed that the South African Football Association (SAFA) has spoken to him about the Bafana Bafana coaching position as uncertainty continues over Hugo Broos’ future with the national team.
Broos remains under contract until the end of July, but no new agreement has been reached to extend his stay despite guiding South Africa to one of the country’s greatest football achievements.
The Belgian tactician recently led Bafana Bafana to the knockout stages of the 2026 FIFA World Cup for the first time in the nation’s history, raising questions over whether he will remain in charge beyond his current deal.
With speculation surrounding the national team’s next coach continuing to grow, Mosimane has revealed that SAFA has already held discussions with him and several other coaches as part of the federation’s succession planning process.
“Well, the Bafana Bafana job, I don’t know when the contract ends. I guess we’re talking about Hugo Broos, right?” Mosimane said.
“I don’t know when the contract ends or if it’s available or not, but I know that the federation has spoken to a lot of us about somebody to come in as part of the succession plan – what you want, what you’re going to do, what’s your plan, and how do we take Bafana to a better level.”
The former Mamelodi Sundowns and Al Ahly coach has previously made it clear that he would welcome another opportunity to lead the South African national team.
Speaking in February, Mosimane said he believes he has achieved almost everything possible in African club football, but winning the Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) with Bafana Bafana remains one of the biggest ambitions left in his coaching career.
Mosimane has previous experience with the national team, having first served as Bafana Bafana’s caretaker coach for seven matches in 2007 before Carlos Alberto Parreira was appointed head coach. He later worked as Parreira’s assistant during the 2010 FIFA World Cup on home soil before succeeding him as the permanent head coach after the tournament.
His tenure as Bafana Bafana coach came to an end in June 2012 following a 1-1 draw against Ethiopia in South Africa’s opening match of the 2014 FIFA World Cup qualifiers.
Should SAFA appoint a new coach after Broos’ contract expires, the successful candidate’s first major assignment will be guiding Bafana Bafana through the 2027 AFCON qualifiers, which will run from September to March 2027.
South Africa have been drawn in Group D alongside Guinea, Eritrea and 2027 AFCON co-hosts Kenya.
