Provincial Referees Put Through Their Paces Ahead Of New Football Season
The KwaZulu-Natal provincial referees’ panel has stepped up preparations for the 2026/27 football season following a successful two-day Provincial Referees’ Workshop hosted by the KwaZulu-Natal Department of Sport, Arts and Culture in partnership with the KwaZulu-Natal Football Association (SAFA KZN).
Held early in September, the workshop brought together approximately 80 match officials, including referees, assistant referees and match commissioners, who participated in an intensive programme aimed at strengthening their technical understanding, decision-making and overall readiness for the season ahead.
The workshop formed part of the province’s broader preparations for the new football season and followed the successful completion of the provincial referees’ fitness tests on 22 August. The fitness assessments provided officials with an opportunity to demonstrate their physical preparedness, while the workshop complemented this by focusing on the technical and theoretical aspects required for effective match officiating.
A key focus of the two-day programme was ensuring that match officials remain fully conversant with the latest amendments to the FIFA Laws of the Game. Participants were taken through important technical considerations and practical applications of the Laws, with emphasis placed on consistency, accuracy and professionalism in decision-making.
For referees and assistant referees, a sound understanding of the Laws of the Game is essential to ensuring that matches are managed fairly and efficiently. Match commissioners also play an important role in maintaining high standards around match-day administration and supporting the overall integrity of competitions. The workshop therefore provided an important platform for all participants to align their understanding and approach ahead of the new season.
The KwaZulu-Natal Department of Sport, Arts and Culture remains committed to working closely with sporting bodies, federations and other key stakeholders to strengthen development pathways within sport. Through initiatives such as the Provincial Referees’ Workshop, the Department continues to create meaningful opportunities for officials, athletes, administrators and other sporting practitioners to improve their skills, gain valuable experience and reach their full potential.
The development of competent and confident match officials is particularly important to the growth of football in the province. Referees are entrusted with upholding the Laws of the Game and ensuring that matches are conducted in a manner that promotes fairness, discipline and respect. Investing in their continuous development therefore contributes directly to the quality and credibility of football competitions across KwaZulu-Natal.
The Department also hopes that the current generation of match officials will draw inspiration from the achievements of Eugene Mdluli, the current KZN Technical Official of the Year and PSL Referee of the Year. His accomplishments serve as an example of what can be achieved through dedication, discipline, continuous learning and commitment to excellence.
As KwaZulu-Natal continues its proud tradition of producing high-quality football officials, the Provincial Referees’ Workshop represents another important step towards ensuring that the province’s match officials are well prepared for the demands of the 2026/27 season.
With their fitness, technical knowledge and understanding of the latest Laws of the Game strengthened, the province’s refereeing fraternity now looks forward to the new season with renewed confidence and a shared commitment to maintaining high standards on and off the field.
