Esterhuizen Retains Leadership For New Season At The Sharks

Springbok centre Andre Esterhuizen will once again captain the Hollywoodbets Sharks this season.
Voted Players’ Player of the Year at last season’s Sharks Awards, Esterhuizen continues to lead through his uncompromising physical presence and work ethic.
He will be supported on matchdays by co-captains Emile van Heerden, Nick Hatton, and Vincent Tshituka.
As the Durban outfit builds its next chapter, Head Coach JP Pietersen has placed significant emphasis on embedding a high-performance culture rooted in discipline, accountability, and respect. To safeguard these values, Springbok prop Vincent Koch and loose forward Phepsi Buthelezi have been appointed as Club Captains.
Speaking on the leadership appointments, Pietersen highlighted the collective responsibility within the squad:
“Andre has been an outstanding leader for this team, and I have absolute faith in him to keep setting that standard on the field. What makes this group special is the depth around him: Emile, Nick, and Vincent Tshituka will share that responsibility as co-captains, while Vincent Koch and Phepsi Buthelezi will work alongside Andre and our coaching staff to drive standards and shared responsibility.
“Every player in this squad has a leader close by, holding the same line. That means all of us—players and coaches alike—are accountable to one another. Nobody is above the standard; everybody is held to it equally. That is the culture our coaching team and this leadership group will drive throughout the season.”
This appointment marks a deliberate evolution in the Sharks’ management framework, establishing a distinct divide between matchday captains and cultural custodians.
Esterhuizen’s mandate focuses on the 80 minutes on the pitch—making calls under pressure and leading by physical example.
Meanwhile, Koch and Buthelezi’s responsibilities extend far beyond matchday, setting the tone in the gym, on the training paddock, and across the locker room to align squad conduct with the team’s historical values.
With the new season kicking off next Saturday, excitement is building at Hollywoodbets Kings Park as the Sharks establish a unified, multi-tiered leadership team.
