“Not Like Any Other Game” — Matthews

Mamelodi Sundowns winger Tashreeq Matthews is targeting continuity after returning from international duty with Bafana Bafana as he prepares for his first MTN8 final against Orlando Pirates.
Matthews was a key figure for Sundowns before the recent FIFA international break, starting all of the matches played by the Brazilians and making a significant contribution to their impressive start to the 2026/27 campaign.
The 26-year-old scored two goals and provided three assists during that period, helping Sundowns remain top of the Betway Premiership standings, reach the MTN8 final and claim the FIFA African-Asian-Pacific Cup.
Sundowns secured the latter achievement last month when they defeated Asian champions Al Ahli 2-1, with Matthews playing an important role in the team’s strong run.
Having returned from Bafana duty, Matthews is now focused on picking up where he left off before the international break as Sundowns prepare for a major clash against Pirates at Moses Mabhida Stadium on Saturday.
“I’m very grateful and motivated as well,” he said.
“I’d just like to continue from where I was before I went to Bafana and, now that I’m back, continue from there.”
The MTN8 final will also be a special occasion for Matthews, as it will be his first appearance in the competition’s showpiece since joining Sundowns from Swedish club IK Sirius in January 2024.
The winger is eager to make the occasion count as Sundowns look to overcome Pirates and add another trophy to their collection.
“I’m very excited for the final,” he added.
“It’s not like any other game. We have to win the final, and we’re just very excited to be here.
“We’re going to do our best to get through it and try to get the victory.”
With Matthews aiming to regain his pre-break rhythm and continue his strong form, Sundowns will hope his creativity and attacking threat can help them overcome Pirates and lift the MTN8 trophy at Moses Mabhida Stadium.
