‘We Have The Edge Over Pirates’ – Mkhulise

Mamelodi Sundowns midfielder Sphelele Mkhulise has sent a warning to defending champions Orlando Pirates, insisting that the Brazilians will never consider themselves underdogs heading into the MTN8 final.

The African champions will face Pirates at Moses Mabhida Stadium on Saturday in what promises to be a highly anticipated showdown, with both sides eager to claim the first domestic trophy of the season.

Sundowns head into the clash on the back of their recent success in the Africa-Asian Pacific Cup and will be looking to add another piece of silverware to their trophy cabinet this season.

Mkhulise believes Sundowns have an advantage over Pirates heading into the encounter, insisting that the club’s quality and structure ensure they will always back themselves, regardless of the occasion.

“I think we do have some sort of advantage. As Sundowns, we will never be underdogs,” said Mkhulise.

“We will always have an advantage because we have the best leadership, coaches and players at the club, so we will always have that advantage.”

Mkhulise has struggled for regular game time at Sundowns, with head coach Miguel Cardoso offering him limited opportunities. Competition for places in midfield has also intensified following the arrival of Thabo Cele, further increasing the battle for playing time.

The midfielder has now opened up about his limited opportunities under Cardoso, insisting that he remains patient and professional while waiting for his chance to prove himself.

“My job is to be professional, no matter what happens outside,” said Mkhulise.

“I have to be professional and work hard. As you said, no matter what I do at training, I’m still not playing. What I do is support my teammates because I know that I will also get my opportunity. When it comes, I want to be ready to deliver for Mamelodi Sundowns.”
