Australia Beat South Africa By 214 Runs In 1st Test At Kingsmead

Australia claimed a convincing 214-run victory over South Africa in the first Test at Kingsmead on Tuesday, taking a 1-0 lead in the three-match series after a dominant performance with both bat and ball.

Matt Renshaw starred with the bat, while Josh Hazlewood delivered a devastating spell on the final day to dismantle the Proteas’ resistance and seal victory for the visitors.

Australia, who elected to bat first, recovered from a precarious position of 124/6 to post 390 all out in their first innings. Renshaw produced a magnificent career-best 190, providing the backbone of the Australian innings and rescuing his side from a potentially damaging collapse.

South Africa responded with 284 all out, with David Bedingham top-scoring with 49 and Aiden Markram contributing 37. However, poor shot selection and a lack of application at the crease undermined the Proteas’ efforts.

Pat Cummins led the Australian bowling attack with three wickets for 54 runs, while Hazlewood, Mitchell Starc and Nathan Lyon claimed two wickets apiece.

Australia carried a 106-run first-innings lead into their second innings and strengthened their position through another valuable contribution from Renshaw, who scored 82. Nic Maddinson chipped in with 48 as the visitors declared on 314/6, setting South Africa a formidable target of 421 runs for victory.

The Proteas faced an uphill battle heading into the final day after finishing day four on 102/4. Markram was unbeaten on 45 overnight, but Australia needed only six more wickets to seal the contest.

Markram showed considerable determination on Tuesday, battling his way to 75 off 237 deliveries, but the home side struggled to build meaningful partnerships around him.

Hazlewood proved decisive, producing career-best Test figures of 6/49 as South Africa were bowled out for 206. The visitors claimed the final four wickets for just five runs, bringing the contest to a swift conclusion.

Renshaw’s outstanding performance earned him the Player of the Match award after he scored 190 and 82 with the bat and claimed two wickets in South Africa’s second innings.

The defeat leaves the Proteas with plenty to consider ahead of the second Test, particularly their inability to capitalise on Australia’s early first-innings collapse and their struggles against the visitors’ disciplined bowling attack.

Australia, meanwhile, will take considerable confidence from their recovery in the opening innings and their clinical execution with the ball. With a 1-0 series lead secured, the visitors have put themselves in a strong position heading into the second Test in Gqeberha.

Beyond the result, the match also attracted criticism over poor attendance, with the lack of spectators at Kingsmead raising questions about public interest in the contest. For many observers, the disappointing turnout was an unwelcome backdrop to an otherwise compelling performance by the Australian side.
