Bafana Winger Joins Chiefs On Free Transfer

Kaizer Chiefs have confirmed the signing of Bafana Bafana international Elias Mokwana on a free transfer.

Mokwana had been a free agent since parting ways with Tunisian giants Esperance Sportive de Tunis in mid-September 2026. The 27-year-old winger initially joined Esperance from Sekhukhune United in 2024 for a reported R7 million transfer fee, making 38 appearances across all competitions while registering seven goals and four assists.

He subsequently spent time on loan at Saudi Pro League outfit Al Hazem, scoring once and providing three assists in 26 appearances.

However, after the Saudi side opted against making the deal permanent, Mokwana found himself sidelined upon his return to Tunis as Esperance had already filled their allotted foreign player spots.

“Kaizer Chiefs have signed Bafana Bafana international Elias Mokwana,” read a statement from the club.

“The talented winger joins the club after gaining valuable experience in North Africa and the Middle East. The 27-year-old, who hails from KwaMhlanga in Mpumalanga, returns to South African football after spending the past two seasons abroad following his move from Sekhukhune United to Tunisian giants, Espérance Sportive de Tunis, in 2024. Welcome to the Kaizer Chiefs Family.”

Mokwana, who was heavily linked with Amakhosi prior to his move to North Africa, joins a Chiefs side looking to bounce back following their Soweto Derby defeat to Orlando Pirates over the weekend.

The wide man will be hoping to be registered in time to make his debut when Chiefs host Siwelele FC in the Carling Knockout quarter-finals at Peter Mokaba Stadium in Polokwane on Sunday [15:00].
