Abdi Banda Set To Depart Richards Bay

Tanzanian defender Abdi Banda is reportedly leaving Richards Bay at the end of this season. The 29-year-old hasn’t featured in any of the club’s promotion/relegation playoff matches under coach Vusi Vilakazi.

Banda’s last appearance for Bay was a forgettable one. He received a red card in a 3-0 away defeat to his former club, Chippa United, back in March. This incident, deemed reckless by management, significantly impacted his playing time.

Signed by Richards Bay after the season began due to a successful FIFA non-payment case against Chippa, Banda made only eight appearances in all competitions. The KwaZulu-Natal club finished second-from-bottom in the league.

“My contract with the club is finishing this month end,” Banda told Sportswire.

“But I don’t think I’m coming back to Bay.”

Banda’s South African journey began with Baroka FC in the 2017/18 season. He played a key role in their 2018/19 Carling Knockout triumph against Orlando Pirates via a penalty shootout win. After a stint at Highlands Park in the following season, he joined Chippa United for the 2022/23 campaign. Notably, he scored the winning goal for Chippa against Pirates in a league match at Orlando Stadium last season.

Richards Bay needs just a win or draw against Baroka (another of Banda’s former clubs) in the upcoming promotion/relegation playoffs to secure their PSL status. The match will be played at King Zwelithini Stadium on Wednesday.
