Allende Hints At Tactical Differences Between Mngqithi And Mokwena

Mamelodi Sundowns midfielder Marcelo Allende has expressed satisfaction with working under Manqoba Mngqithi, confirming a shift in the team’s offensive approach.

Following the unexpected dismissal of Rulani Mokwena as Sundowns head coach, Mngqithi assumed the role in July, leading the Masandawana technical team. The club also brought back former “senior coach” Steve Komphela from Golden Arrows and former AmaZulu coach Roman Folz to assist Mngqithi.

The Chilean midfielder insists there have been minimal changes to Sundowns’ tactical setup since the new coaching staff took over. “I think it’s not new because he has been with us for a long time, maybe he’s the boss now, but it’s the same players,” Allende confirmed.

Mngqithi has hinted at a change in attacking style for Sundowns, transitioning from Mokwena’s patient build-up play to a more direct and fast-paced approach, utilizing wing play. Allende echoed his coach’s sentiments, suggesting a more direct style under Mngqithi. “Of course, he has different ideas about ball possession, maybe more direct, but it’s still good,” Allende asserted.

Sundowns concluded their last record-breaking season by winning the inaugural African Football League (AFL) and the Betway Premiership for the record seventh-successuve time. Allende emphasized the team’s strong pre-season preparation, setting a positive tone for the upcoming season. “Preparation is going very well, with good training and intensity. I think we are ready to start,” Allende said.

Sundowns will face Polokwane City in their MTN8 quarter-final in their opening match of the 2024/25 season at Lucas Moripe Stadium on Sunday afternoon.
