Banyana Banyana Draw 1-1 With Senegal In Physical Encounter
Banyana Banyana battled to a 1-1 draw against Senegal in the first of their two international friendlies, played at Stade Lat Dior in Thies, Senegal on Saturday night.
The match was a physical affair, with South Africa dominating possession in the first half but failing to convert their chances. Coach Desiree Ellis made a tactical change early in the second half, bringing on Kholoso Biyana for Sinoxolo Cesane to add more attacking presence.
The substitution proved effective as Banyana Banyana took the lead in the 67th minute through a well-worked combination play that resulted in a goal from Nthabiseng Majiya. Senegal resorted to long balls in search of an equalizer, but Banyana’s defense, anchored by goalkeeper Kaylan Swart, remained resolute.
Ellis continued to rotate her squad, bringing on fresh legs in the later stages. However, a late lapse in concentration saw South Africa concede a penalty in the final minute after a scramble in the box. Senegal converted the penalty to snatch a dramatic draw.
“We dominated the match but couldn’t capitalize on our opportunities,” reflected Coach Ellis. “We anticipated Senegal’s long-ball tactics and were prepared for them. We achieved our objective of giving more players experience, and they’ll continue to adapt to our system as we build towards WAFCON.”
The two teams will meet again in the second international friendly on 4 June, at the same venue.
