Biyela: Ancestors Will Turn Against Me If I don’t Keep Vusi
Richards Bay chairman Sifiso Biyela feels compelled to extend coach Vusi Vilakazi’s contract, fearing retribution from his ancestors if he doesn’t.
Biyela confirmed he will meet with Vilakazi to discuss a new deal. The coach successfully steered the team away from relegation to the Motsepe Foundation Championship.
Vilakazi’s impressive performance culminated in a 4-0 thrashing of Baroka FC in the final game of the PSL promotion/relegation playoffs at King Zwelithini Stadium on Wednesday. His current contract expires at the end of the month.
Appointed in November to assist coach Kaitano Tembo, Vilakazi took the reins solo in December after Tembo’s departure due to unsatisfactory results.
“The reality is, why fix it if it’s not broken? Yes, we will sit down with him,” said Biyela.
“And see how we make it a point that we finalise some of the things we have to discuss, but there is no reason not to offer him a contract.
“This thing of following names of coaches or people who can do work, I think we have learnt our lesson. Why fix it if it’s not broken? He has done well. He took us from 12 points to 13 with the very same players. Our is to support him. We can’t really chase him away now that we are safe, we feel big, we can’t do that.
“We are the Zulu people, the ancestor will fight with you if you play with people after they have done their work, just because you got the power to do that.”
During his 24-game tenure, Vilakazi secured 12 wins, 4 draws, and suffered 8 losses for Richards Bay.
