Bafana Bafana coach Hugo Broos says the red card received by powerful defender Mbekezeli Mbokazi is a valuable lesson the youngster will learn from as he continues to grow in his career.

Mbokazi was sent off in the final minute as Bafana dropped crucial points in a goalless draw against Zimbabwe in a FIFA World Cup qualifying match at the Moses Mabhida Stadium on Friday.

The 20-year-old, who has been in outstanding form for Orlando Pirates this season, will now miss the decisive World Cup qualifier against Rwanda at Mbombela Stadium on Tuesday due to suspension.

In his absence, Broos has called up Stellenbosch defender Thabo Moloisane as a replacement ahead of the high-stakes clash against Amavubi in Nelspruit.

“It shows Mbokazi’s mentality,” said Broos. “He got frustrated. We knew that with the result, we were in trouble, so he did something that a young player can do.

“I don’t blame him for that. It’s something he will have to learn — he’s only 19 years old. What do you expect? The boy wants to win; you can see that in the way he plays.

“The Zimbabwe player was half his size but played very aggressively against him. You can’t accept what Mbokazi did, but you can understand why it happened.

“That red card was not the reason we didn’t win the match.”

Bafana created several chances against Zimbabwe, hitting the post twice through Mohau Nkota and Lyle Foster. Foster also saw a goalbound effort denied after rounding goalkeeper Washington Arubi.

Heading into Tuesday’s clash in Mbombela, Bafana cannot afford to drop any more points. They must beat Rwanda and hope that Nigeria — who defeated Lesotho at Peter Mokaba Stadium on Friday — overcome Group C leaders Benin in Uyo.

Benin currently lead the group with 17 points after beating Rwanda on Friday, while Bafana sit second on 15 points, one ahead of third-placed Nigeria.

In the African qualifiers, only the group winners automatically qualify for the FIFA World Cup in Canada, Mexico, and the USA. The four best second-placed teams will advance to a play-off round for another shot at qualification.
