eThekwini Municipality Guarantees MTN8 Final Security Amid Boycott Threats

eThekwini Municipality has assured football fans that Saturday’s MTN8 final between Orlando Pirates and Mamelodi Sundowns will be safe, despite threats of a boycott linked to tensions surrounding foreign nationals in Durban.

The City has also warned that access to the Moses Mabhida Stadium precinct will be strictly controlled, with entry to the stadium limited to valid ticket holders.

The heightened security protocol follows a week of political and social tension across the country.

Why Did Civil Unrest Flare Up in Durban Before the Final?

Tensions rose after the Constitutional Court of South Africa declared key restrictive provisions of the Refugees Act unconstitutional. The court ruled that asylum seekers cannot be turned away on purely administrative grounds, reaffirming South Africa’s legal obligation of non-refoulement.

The decision led to thousands of foreign nationals gathering at Department of Home Affairs Refugee Reception Offices (RROs) across South Africa. In Durban, widespread protests erupted on Thursday, resulting in clashes and damage to foreign-owned businesses.

Although the Director-General of Home Affairs withdrew the internal administrative directive governing asylum intakes on Friday morning, the Constitutional Court ruling remains legally binding. Amid lingering civil friction, groups called for a public boycott of Saturday’s showpiece event.

Is the MTN8 Final at Moses Mabhida Stadium Safe for Fans?

eThekwini Municipality released a formal statement on Friday reassuring local residents and visiting supporters that the venue and surrounding coastal precinct are fully secured.

Official Statement from eThekwini Municipality:

“eThekwini Municipality is ready to welcome thousands of football fans to Durban for the highly anticipated MTN8 Final between Orlando Pirates and Mamelodi Sundowns at Moses Mabhida Stadium on Saturday, 10 October 2026.

“The City has activated a comprehensive operational plan covering traffic management, public safety, and crowd control across the stadium precinct to ensure a safe, vibrant, and well-coordinated event.”

City Manager Musa Mbhele emphasized the event’s broader significance for the coastal region.

“Hosting the MTN8 Final is a proud moment for Durban and a significant boost for our local economy,” Mbhele stated. “Events of this scale drive tourism, support local businesses, and affirm our city’s standing as a world-class events destination.”

What Road Closures and Security Measures Are Active in Durban?

Stadium gates open at 14h00, with kick-off scheduled for 18h00.

To maintain security and manage traffic, Isaiah Ntshangase Road will close at 12h00 and reopen only after pedestrian crowds clear following the match. Durban Metro Police and SAPS will operate joint checkpoints throughout the precinct.

Entry to the stadium perimeter remains strictly limited to valid ticket holders. Fans without tickets are instructed to avoid the venue entirely. To accommodate ticketless supporters, the municipality has set up an official fan park and public viewing area at the Bay of Plenty on OR Tambo Parade (South Beach), featuring live entertainment from 12h00.

Parking is available at Mastering Field, Suncoast Casino, and along Umgeni Road, with a dedicated drop-off zone arranged to prevent traffic delays. Municipal authorities appeal to all attendees to cooperate with law enforcement officials throughout the evening.
