Broos To Receive R19 Million FIFA World Cup Bonus
Former Bafana Bafana head coach Hugo Broos is set to earn nearly R19.1 million ($1 million) as his contractual cut of the South African Football Association’s (SAFA) 2026 FIFA World Cup prize money.
SAFA Vice President Linda Zwane confirmed the figures during a fiery session with Parliament’s Portfolio Committee on Sports, Arts and Culture on Tuesday, responding to direct inquiries from Economic Freedom Fighters (EFF) MP Eugene Mthethwa.
FIFA awarded SAFA $12 million (approximately R191.2 million) after Bafana Bafana reached the Round of 32. Under the terms of their contracts, Broos secures 10% of the tournament total, while assistant coach Helman Mkhalele earns 5% (R9.5 million).
“In terms of FIFA prize money, SAFA is going to receive $12 million from FIFA for reaching the Round of 32,” Zwane told parliamentarians. “In line with the contracts of the technical team, the head coach is entitled to 10 percent, and the assistant coach will get five percent.”
Bafana Bafana made history at the 2026 World Cup by advancing past the group stage for the first time in the nation’s history, before suffering a dramatic elimination against Canada in the Round of 32.
Broos, who took charge in May 2021 and guided South Africa to a bronze medal at the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON), retired at the end of July. The 74-year-old Belgian strategist confirmed he would not extend his tenure through to the 2030 World Cup.
SAFA is actively recruiting Broos’ successor. Although SAFA’s National Executive Committee (NEC) formally approved Pitso Mosimane as the preferred candidate, negotiations remain ongoing regarding salary compensation and the structure of his technical backroom staff.
Concurrently, SAFA addressed mounting pressure from Sports, Arts and Culture Minister Gayton McKenzie over a R30 million grant intended for Video Assistant Referee (VAR) implementation. McKenzie had issued a 21-day deadline for SAFA to refund the unspent funds.
SAFA leadership assured the portfolio committee that the R30 million remains fully intact in a dedicated, interest-bearing account and has not been misallocated.
