Chiefs Fall Short In Confed Cup Opener

Kaizer Chiefs suffered a disappointing 2-1 loss to Egyptian giants Al Masry in their CAF Confederation Cup group stage opener at the Suez Canal Stadium on Sunday evening.

Despite a strong start, Amakhosi were unable to capitalize on their scoring opportunities, leaving them trailing behind Al Masry.

The match began with Chiefs creating several scoring chances in the first 20 minutes, but their inability to finish chances proved costly.

The first half ended goalless, with both teams failing to make a breakthrough despite their best efforts.

In the second half, Chiefs continued to create opportunities, but Al Masry’s clinical finishing ultimately made the difference. A penalty awarded after Brandon Petersen’s foul gave Al Masry the lead through Bonheur Mugisha, but Chiefs quickly responded after the coach introduced youngsters Mfundo Vilakazi and Asanele Velebhayi.

Vilakazi’s assist led to Dillan Solomons’ equalizing goal, a well-taken left-footed shot from outside the box.

Despite Vilakazi’s promising performance, including a shot that went wide in the 72nd minute, Chiefs were unable to secure a draw.

Al Masry sealed the win with a goal in the 88th minute, as Mohamed Hashem scored from six yards out after Inacio Miguel’s poor marking.

As a result, Chiefs find themselves at the bottom of Group D, while Al Masry leads the group with three points. The standings could change after the other Group D match between Zamalek and ZESCO United, scheduled for later on Sunday.

Chiefs will look to bounce back in their next match against Zamalek at home next Sunday. Al Masry, on the other hand, will travel to Zambia to face ZESCO on Sunday as well.
