Chiefs’ Pre-Season Woes Continue In Netherlands

Kaizer Chiefs endured another disappointing outing in their pre-season campaign in the Netherlands, suffering a 4-0 defeat to Dutch side FC Utrecht on Friday.

This loss marks their second consecutive friendly defeat in Europe, having previously lost 2-1 to Vitesse Arnhem on Tuesday.

Chiefs coach Nasreddine Nabi started the match with Brandon Petersen in goal, protected by a back four of Thabiso Monyane, Nkanyiso Shinga, Inacio Miguel, and Aden McCarthy. The midfield pivot consisted of Thabo Cele and Sibongiseni Mthethwa, with Mduduzi Shabalala, Nkosingiphile Ngcobo, and Glody Lilepo playing in advanced roles to support new striker Flavio Da Silva.

However, FC Utrecht, who finished fourth in the Eredivisie last season and are set to compete in the UEFA Europa League playoffs, started strongly. Siebe Horemans quickly gave the Dutch side the lead with a close-range tap-in.

Chiefs attempted to regain control, with Shabalala notably cutting in from the left and unleashing a shot that was saved by Vasilis Barkas. Despite these efforts, Utrecht extended their lead in the 48th minute through Adrian Blake. Blake completed his brace in the 55th minute, freely tapping in a cross from Siebe Horemans after a clever backheel from David Min.

Second-Half Struggles and Fan Concerns

Despite making several changes in the second half, Chiefs struggled to trouble the comfortable Dutch side, who effectively thwarted all Amakhosi’s attacks. While Chiefs did create three late chances, including efforts from Pule Mmodi and Samkelo Zwane, they failed to find the back of the net.

As Chiefs tried to get back, Miliano Jonathans made it 4-0 in the 83rd minute for FC Utrecht.

This consecutive loss has left Chiefs fans concerned, especially given the club’s recent struggles. They are particularly unhappy with the contribution of new signing Flavio Da Silva, whose acquisition from the Indonesian league has drawn criticism regarding the club’s player scouting and profiling, given that the Indonesian league is perceived as less competitive than the DStv Premiership.

Chiefs are the second Soweto giant to lose on Friday, following Orlando Pirates’ 2-0 defeat to Bolton Wanderers in Malaga, Spain. Fans will be hoping for a much-improved performance in their third and final pre-season friendly in the Netherlands.
