Banyana Comeback To Hold A Strong Tanzania Side

Banyana Banyana played out a 1-1 draw against Tanzania in their second group stage match of the Women’s AFCON 2024 at the Honneur Stadium in Oujda, Morocco on Friday evening.

The match got off to a rocky start for Banyana, with the team committing numerous errors in defense within the first 15 minutes. Fortunately, Tanzania was unable to capitalize on these mistakes.

The Tanzanians took the lead in the 24th minute after Noxolo Cesane’s foul earned them a free kick.

Maseke Marwa delivered a precise ball to captain Opah Clement, who scored a well-placed header. The Banyana goalkeeper, Kaylin Swart, was caught off guard and failed to make the save.

Banyana had a chance to level the score in the 37th minute when Jermaine Seoposenwe took a long-range shot, but Tanzania’s goalkeeper, Najiat Idrisa, made a spectacular save to deny the South Africans.

The first half ended with Tanzania leading 1-0, with Banyana struggling to find their footing.

In an attempt to turn the game around, coach Desiree Ellis introduced Lebohang Ramalepe and Hildah Magaia at the start of the second half.

The duo’s introduction had an immediate impact, as Banyana created several scoring opportunities in the first 15 minutes of the second half.

Despite their best efforts, they were unable to convert these chances into goals.

Banyana came close to equalizing in the 67th minute when Fikile Magama’s long-range shot was again saved by Idrisa, resulting in a corner kick.

Fortunately for Banyana, they were able to capitalize on the set piece, with defender Bambanani Mbane scoring from close range from a smart corner in the 70th minute to level the score.

The game took a dramatic turn in the 84th minute when Tanzania’s Elizabeth Chenge was given a straight red card for a foul on Linda Mothlalo, following a Video Assistant Referee (VAR) review.

Despite their numerical advantage, Banyana was unable to find the winning goal, and the match ended 1-1.

The draw sees Banyana Banyana leading Group C with four points, level with Mali, who also drew 1-1 with Ghana earlier in the day.

Banyana’s next match will be against Mali on Monday at the Honneur Stadium, where they will aim to secure a spot in the quarterfinals.

Tanzania, meanwhile, will face Ghana on Monday, with both teams still in contention for a place in the next round.
