Chiefs Produce Unbelievable Second-Half Blitz Against Sundowns

Kaizer Chiefs produced a stunning second-half comeback to beat Mamelodi Sundowns 4-2 after trailing by two goals at half-time in a thrilling DStv Diski Challenge encounter at Dobsonville Stadium on Sunday afternoon.

Amakhosi came into the match hoping to make it two wins from two after starting their campaign with an impressive victory over arch-rivals Orlando Pirates in the opening Soweto Derby last weekend.

However, coach Vela Khumalo’s side endured a difficult first half against the Brazilians, who took control of the contest and went into the break with a comfortable 2-0 lead.

Sundowns opened the scoring in the 15th minute when Simphiwe Mlondo found the back of the net before Lehlohonolo Mahlangu doubled their advantage five minutes before half-time.

Chiefs returned from the interval with a completely different approach and quickly began piling pressure on Sundowns.

Their efforts were rewarded just two minutes into the second half when Kamogelo Malefo pulled one back in the 47th minute to give Amakhosi renewed belief.

The Phefeni Glamour Boys continued pushing for an equaliser and eventually got their reward in the 68th minute, with Samkelo Msimango finding the back of the net to level the scores at 2-2.

Chiefs then completed their remarkable turnaround six minutes later when substitute Benjamin Eliyahu came off the bench to score in the 74th minute, putting Amakhosi ahead for the first time.

Neo Bohloko, who scored a long-range goal against the Buccaneers in the opening game last weekend, then sealed the comeback from the penalty spot in the 86th minute to secure Chiefs’ second victory of the season.

The result sees Amakhosi move into second place on the DStv Diski Challenge log with six points from their opening two matches. They are level on points with leaders AmaZulu, who remain top thanks to their superior goal difference.

Sundowns, meanwhile, drop to seventh place with three points after suffering their first defeat of the campaign, having won their opening match last weekend.

There were several other DStv Diski Challenge matches played on Sunday.

Golden Arrows claimed a 3-2 victory over Polokwane City at Old Peter Mokaba Stadium, while Milford secured a 3-1 win over Kruger United at Princess Magogo Stadium.

Marumo Gallants and Sekhukhune United, meanwhile, played to a 1-1 draw at TUT Stadium.

On Saturday, defending champions Pirates bounced back from their opening Soweto Derby defeat by beating Stellenbosch 4-1 at UJ Soweto Stadium.

AmaZulu also continued their strong start to the campaign with a 2-0 victory over Richards Bay at Princess Magogo Stadium.

Siwelele recorded a 2-0 win over Chippa United at UJ AW Muller Stadium, while TS Galaxy secured a narrow 1-0 victory over Durban City at Sugar Ray Xulu Stadium.

After two rounds of action, only Chiefs, AmaZulu and TS Galaxy have won both of their opening league matches.

The three sides therefore occupy the top three positions on the table, with all three having collected maximum points from their first two games.
