Derby Heartbreak! 10-Man Amakhosi Derail Pirates’ Title Charge

Kaizer Chiefs produced a defensive masterclass at Prince Magogo Stadium on Sunday, defeating arch-rivals Orlando Pirates 2-1 to throw the DStv Diski Challenge title race into chaos.

Despite playing with ten men for over 75 minutes, Amakhosi secured their second derby win of the season at Princess Magogo Stadium on Sunday, extending the Buccaneers’ winless Derby streak to three seasons.

Early Drama and Red Card

The match exploded into life in the 15th minute when Chiefs’ Kabelo Nkgwesa was shown a straight red card for handling the ball inside the area. Pirates’ Mpho Padime stepped up to the spot, coolly sending goalkeeper Takalani Mazhamba the wrong way to give the league leaders an early 1-0 advantage.

The Fightback

Instead of crumbling, the numerical disadvantage seemed to galvanize Chiefs. In the 26th minute, Man of the Match Steven Mendes leveled the score with a thunderous right-footed strike from inside the box.

Chiefs struck again immediately after the restart. In the 48th minute, Naledi Hlongwane pounced on a defensive lapse to set up Kamogelo Malefo, who clinically tucked a left-footed shot into the bottom corner.

Offside Heartbreak for Bucs

Pirates thought they had rescued a point in the 58th minute when Oratile Rantasi turned in a rebound, but the assistant referee’s flag for offside silenced the Buccaneers’ celebrations. Despite late pressure, Chiefs held firm to remain in fifth place (39 points), while Pirates stay top (57 points), nursing a precarious three-point lead over Mamelodi Sundowns.

DDC Weekend Round-Up

It was a high-scoring weekend across the KwaZulu-Natal venues:

Sekhukhune United dominated the Limpopo derby, beating Magesi 3-0.

Durban City produced the result of the round, thrashing Stellenbosch 5-1 at Chatsworth Stadium.

Golden Arrows saw off TS Galaxy 3-1.

Orbit College shocked AmaZulu with a 3-0 away win.
