Durban City Drop Points, Spurs Sink To Relegation Zone

On Wednesday night, Motsepe Foundation Championship log leaders Durban City dropped crucial points after playing out to a goalless draw with fellow promotion-chasers Orbit College at Chatsworth Stadium.

With nine games to go, the KZN-based outfit retains a decent lead at the summit of the second-tier standings with 41 points collected after 21 league outings. Meanwhile, the Rustenburg side dropped to third place with 35 points after the stalemate.

On the other hand, JDR Stars swiftly ascended to second place and five points behind the leaders following their narrow 1-0 victory over the University Of Pretoria in the Tshwane derby at the Soshanguve Giant Stadium on Tuesday.

Rookies Kruger United continued to impress and strengthened their promotion aspirations with a 2-0 win at the expense of Baroka FC to make it three wins on the trot and extend their unbeaten run to four games.

The Mpumalanga team rounds up the top four. Both Casric Stars and Milford FC snapped their three-game winless runs, as the former claimed a comfortable 3-0 triumph with Pretoria Callies’ scalp at Dobsonville while the latter secured a 1-0 victory at home against Hungry Lions, who are winless in three games. The pair is level on 32 points.

In the midtable, Black Leopards moved within touching distance of the playoff spots after defeating Brandon Truter’s Upington City 1-0. Lidoda Duvha is in seventh place with 30 points as Bafana Ba Gucci remain in 11th place.

Highbury came from a goal down to rescue a point against bottom-placed Leruma United in a 1-1 draw in Gqeberha. With 27 points accumulated and comfortably sitting in position nine, the Yellow Nation looks set to save its status for the upcoming season.

In the fight against the drop, Cape Town Spurs’ woes deepened as they succumbed to a 2-1 defeat at the hands of fellow strugglers Venda FC at Thohoyandou Stadium. The Urban Warriors dropped to 15th place with 19 points – one behind the Vhembe-based club.
