Durban City Maintains Top Spot, Spurs Snap 10-game Winless Run

Durban City maintained their position at the top of the Motsepe Foundation Championship standings after coming from two goals down to secure a thrilling 4-2 victory over Hungry Lions at Chatsworth Stadium on Friday night.

The KZN-based outfit was on the verge of registering their third loss of the season when they were trailing 2-0 after 75 minutes but goals from Bongumusa Nkosi, Samkelo Maseko, Ruzaigh Gamildien, and Joslin Kamatuka snatched the maximum points.

Simo Dladla’s men have accumulated 31 points after 15 matches played, while ambitious promotion-chasing Orbit College is breathing heavily down their neck in second place with 28 points following a narrow 1-0 win against Leruma United on Saturday.

Meanwhile, JDR Stars and Baroka FC both dropped one place down to third and sixth respectively after sharing the spoils in a 3-3 draw at Soshanguve’s Giant Stadium. The former extended their unbeaten streak to five games with the latter stretching theirs to Six.

Newly promoted side Kruger United moved four points adrift of the play-off spots into fifth place with a 1-0 victory over fellow newcomers Highbury at Mbombela Stadium on Sunday.

The Mpumalanga club is unbeaten in their last eight league outings. The mid-table saw some changes, but the University of Pretoria remained stationary in position eight after holding Milford FC to a 1-1 draw, replicating city rivals Pretoria Callies, who played out to a goalless stalemate against Upington City a day before.

As they aim to create some distance between themselves and the relegation zone, Cape Town Spurs clinched maximum points with Casric Stars’ scalp thanks to a solitary goal from Therlo Moosa at Athlone Stadium.

The Urban Warriors won their first match in 11 attempts and remain in 14th place. On the other hand, Venda FC put a halt to Black Leopards’ promotion aspirations with a 2-0 win in the Vhembe derby at Thohoyandou Stadium. Lidoda Duvha have failed to win in their last six encounters as their local rivals snapped a six-game winless form at their expense.
