End Of An Era: Kriel Heading To France

Vodacom Bulls utility back David Kriel will join French giants La Rochelle this July, leaving the South African side as a two-time Currie Cup winner with 142 caps and 53 tries, surpassing Bryan Habana on the club’s all-time try-scoring list.

Kriel has been one of the team’s most consistent performers, earning praise for his pace and athleticism.

Currently in Europe for next weekend’s United Rugby Championship fixture against the Dragons, Kriel expressed his excitement about the move.

“I couldn’t be more excited to be heading there to experience French culture, meet new people, and continue doing what I love most.

“I would like to thank everyone who contributed to my journey with the Vodacom Bulls. I’m grateful to every coach, player, staff member, and fan for making my time here so memorable.

“I appreciate every opportunity and the growth I’ve experienced, not only as a player but also as a person. Goodbyes are never easy, especially when it’s something that means so much to me and a place I’ve called home for the past six years. It’s very difficult to say goodbye. It was a dream of mine to play for the Vodacom Bulls from a young age, and I’m thankful to everyone who made that dream possible.”

Since making his debut in October 2020 on the left wing in a Super Rugby Unlocked clash against Griquas, Kriel has developed into a key figure in the professional era, amassing an impressive 142 caps for the Bulls.

His tenure has been defined by rare versatility, having played almost every position in the backline. Across his 143 appearances, he featured at fullback (41 times), outside centre (36), inside centre (30), and on both wings (26), while also making 10 appearances off the bench.

This adaptability has made him one of the most reliable players in the squad, with only Embrose Papier, Ruan Nortje, and Johan Grobbelaar having earned more caps among current teammates.

Kriel’s statistical impact at Loftus is equally remarkable. With 321 points (53 tries, 16 conversions, and eight penalties), he ranks 25th on the all-time points list. Notably, his 53 tries place him ninth on the Bulls’ all-time try-scoring chart, ahead of legendary figures such as Bryan Habana, as well as current stars Kurt-Lee Arendse and Canan Moodie.

Vodacom Bulls chief executive Edgar Rathbone praised Kriel’s contribution:

“David has been a consummate professional and a cornerstone of our backline over the past six seasons. Watching his transition from a promising talent into a world-class player and leader within our environment has been a privilege for all of us at Loftus.

“While we are naturally disappointed to lose a player of his versatility and character, we support our players’ ambitions to test themselves in different leagues. He leaves with our sincere gratitude for his immense contribution to the blue jersey, and we wish him and his family all the very best for their new adventure in France.”
