Ex-Chiefs Midfielder Handed Two-Year Sentence For Betting Scandal
The former Kaizer Chiefs midfielder Kearyn Baccus has been sentenced to a two-year conditional release order for his involvement in a betting scam during a match in 2023 in Australia.
According to reports in Australia, Baccus, alongside his former teammate Clayton Lewis at Macarthur, was paid R173,729 each to get themselves yellow cards against Sydney on 9 December 2023 to influence overseas bets on the game.
According to court documents in Australia, their yellow cards caused R2,908,008 in losses to the betting market.
Baccus and his former teammate Lewis were recruited for the scam by their ex-team captain, Ulises Alejandro Davila, who allegedly had a Colombian-based contact known as “J Col” orchestrating, as per reports in Australia.
Both Lewis and Davila were sacked by Macarthur while Baccus’ contract ended in June 2024.
Since the former Chiefs player’s contract ended in 2024, he has been working as a truck driver. According to him, he will never play football again, and he has also been suspended from playing football in Australia alongside Lewis.
Baccus has also been ordered to get treatment for gambling addiction.
The 34-year-old joined Chiefs at the beginning of the 2019/20 season under the guidance of Ernst Middendorp and played for three seasons at Naturena, where he scored two goals and provided four assists.
