Former Pirates Attacker Linked With Move To Congolese Giants
Former PSL star and free agent Mahlatsi Makudubela could be set to ply his trade in the Linafoot Ligue 1 after catching the eye of Democratic Republic of Congo giants, where he is reportedly undergoing assessments.
Skudu, as the South African player is fondly known, has been without a club since July 2024 after his contract with Tanzanian Powerhouse Young Africans came to an end at the back end of the previous campaign.
During his brief one-year stay at Yanga, Makudubela helped the club to secure their record-extending fourth consecutive NBC Premier League title, while also clinching the Federation Cup including reaching the CAF Champions League quarterfinals.
Now, after spending six months as an outcast, reports have emerged that the 34-year-old winger has been offered a lifeline by the 1973 African champions AS Vita Club, who have taken a keen interest in assessing the well-traveled player.
This comes after the Kinshasa-based team lost one of their key players Elie Mpanzu, who had been on the radar of Fadlu Davids’ Simba SC for a prolonged period as Vita was holding out on a bigger fee for the highly rated player.
However, before parting ways with the Tanzanian outfit, Makudubela was believed to have attracted interest from another East African juggernaut, Rwandan champions APR FC in addition to Azam FC and a host of Betway Premiership clubs ahead of the 2024/25 term.
While a move never materialized, the Rwandan connection dates back to January 2024 when the ex- Orlando Pirates man staged a dazzling performance against APR in the Mapinduzi Cup held in Zanzibar, leaving a lasting impression.
Having won his maiden league title last season, Makudubela will be relishing the prospect of being crowned champion in another land should he sign on the dotted line. AS Vita is currently leading the pack with a three-point gap in Group B of the 13-team championship.
In addition to Pirates in his native country, the skillful left-footed attacker has represented clubs such as Platinum Stars, Golden Arrows, Mamelodi Sundowns’ reserve team, Chippa United, Highlands Park, University of Pretoria and Marumo Gallants.
