Former SAFA TD Takes Over At Sekhukhune

Sekhukhune United has appointed Walter Steenbok as Director of Football Strategy.

The former SAFA technical lead and Mamelodi Sundowns scout will now oversee Babina Noko’s recruitment, youth pathways, and high-performance philosophy effective immediately.

Steenbok joins Babina Noko after spending more than 10 months out of club football following his departure from the South African Football Association (SAFA) in April 2025.

The 52-year-old initially joined SAFA in September 2022, where he played a key role in youth development, women’s football structures, and elite coaching programmes.

“Sekhukhune United is pleased to announce the appointment of Dr Walter Gaboinewe Steenbok as its new Director of Football Strategy, reinforcing the club’s commitment to long-term excellence and high-performance football,” the club said in a statement on Monday.

In his new role, Steenbok will oversee Babina Noko’s overall football strategy and playing philosophy, ensuring alignment across all levels — from the senior team to development structures. He will also be responsible for the club’s talent pathway, scouting systems, and high-performance programmes.

Steenbok brings a wealth of experience in South African football, having previously worked with Kaizer Chiefs and Mamelodi Sundowns, where he was involved in scouting, recruitment, and performance analysis.

During his time at Chiefs, he was part of the technical team that reached the CAF Champions League final in 2021, further underlining his credentials at the highest level of the game.
