From Wynberg Schoolboy To Facing The All Blacks: How ‘The Chef’ Ahmed Handled His Stormers Debut

For Yaqeen Ahmed, the DHL Stormers’ season launch was another reminder of just how quickly his life has changed.

The 20-year-old flyhalf stood alongside captain Ruhan Nel as the Stormers unveiled their new home and away jerseys ahead of the 2026/27 campaign — a fitting moment for a prospect who has gone from Junior Springbok star to senior Stormers player in the space of just a few months.

But Ahmed is not getting carried away by his meteoric rise.

Instead, the young flyhalf is focused on continuing to learn, improve and make the most of every opportunity that comes his way.

“When I got my chance against the All Blacks, the first thing was to take it,” Ahmed said at the Stormers’ season launch.

“Chances like this don’t come often, and if you miss this one, it might not come again.”

Ahmed’s opportunity came in extraordinary circumstances.

With Sacha Feinberg-Mngomezulu away with the Springboks and Jurie Matthee working his way back from injury, Ahmed was handed the No 10 jersey for the Stormers’ clash with the All Blacks at DHL Stadium.

It was an imposing assignment for a player making his senior Stormers debut, but Ahmed embraced the occasion, taking to it like a duck to water.

“Being able to play against New Zealand wearing the No 10 jersey is really special,” he said excitedly.

His performance further underlined why the Stormers have such high hopes for the youngster.

Ahmed had already enjoyed a remarkable 2026, helping the Junior Springboks retain the World Rugby U20 Championship before earning opportunities with the senior Stormers and SA ‘A’.

Now, though, he knows the difficult part begins.

“It’s taken hard work to get to where I am,” Ahmed explained. “Now, I think it’s just about continuing to put in the work at training, and listening and learning.”

That attitude could be crucial as Ahmed looks to establish himself in a talented Stormers flyhalf group.

The competition for the No 10 jersey is fierce, with Feinberg-Mngomezulu already established as one of South Africa’s most exciting young talents. Yet rather than viewing that competition as an obstacle, Ahmed appears determined to use it as part of his development.

His journey also has a deeply personal element.

Ahmed grew up dreaming of representing the Stormers, making the opportunity to pull on the famous blue-and-white jersey particularly meaningful.

“My dream club was always the Stormers,” he confessed.

“When I put this jersey on, it’s quite emotional. I feel like I belong here and I want to do the best I can while I’m here.”

Those words perhaps best capture Ahmed’s current position.

He knows he still has plenty to learn, but he also believes he belongs at this level.

The Stormers’ season launch provided another important milestone in that journey. Standing beside Nel while wearing the new jersey, Ahmed was no longer simply a promising youngster waiting for his opportunity.

He is now one of the players expected to contribute to the Stormers’ pursuit of silverware.

The 2026/27 season will test whether Ahmed can turn the promise he has shown into sustained senior-level performances.

But after taking his chance against the All Blacks, the youngster has already demonstrated that he is not afraid of the big stage.

And if his words at the season launch are anything to go by, Ahmed intends to make every opportunity count.
