Ghana Sacks Addo: Black Stars Seek New Coach Before World Cup

The Ghana Football Association (GFA) has sacked head coach Otto Addo with less than 70 days remaining before the 2026 FIFA World Cup.

The Black Stars suffered a 2-1 defeat to Germany in a friendly match on Monday, which proved to be Addo’s final game in charge.

Prior to that, Ghana endured a heavy 5-1 loss to Austria, with reports suggesting that even a victory against Germany would not have been enough to save his job, as the previous result had already sealed his fate.

Addo, who spent most of his playing career in Germany, was in his second stint as Ghana head coach.

He previously led the team at the 2022 FIFA World Cup in Qatar, where Ghana exited in the group stages, before stepping down in December after the tournament.

However, he was reappointed in March 2024 following Ghana’s early exit from the 2024 Africa Cup of Nations in Ivory Coast.

The 50-year-old was unable to guide Ghana to qualification for this year’s AFCON in Morocco, although he did help them secure a place at the World Cup.

“The Ghana Football Association (GFA) has parted ways with the head coach of the senior men’s national team (Black Stars), Otto Addo, effective immediately,” the association said in a statement.

“The Association wishes to sincerely thank Otto Addo for his contribution to the team and wishes him the best in his future endeavours.

“The Ghana Football Association will communicate the new technical direction of the Black Stars in due course.”

Meanwhile, reports in Ghana suggest that Kwesi Appiah, who led the Black Stars to the 2014 FIFA World Cup, is the favourite to take over.

Appiah is currently the head coach of Sudan.
