Khumalo Clarifies Captaincy Mix-Up in Bafana’s COSAFA Cup Opener

Bafana Bafana’s COSAFA team coach, Vela Khumalo, has shed light on the confusion surrounding the team’s captaincy during their 1-0 loss in the opening match against Mozambique.

In the starting lineup, Kaizer Chiefs’ young defender Aden McCarthy was named captain, but TS Galaxy veteran striker Victor Letsoalo wore the captain’s armband during the game.

Khumalo attributed the mix-up to an error on the team’s part.

“It was just an error from our side, ” Khumalo said.

“Initially, Victor (Letsoalo) is the captain and Aden (McCarthy) is the vice captain. So, it was just a mistake from our side.”

Khumalo also expressed gratitude to the South African fans who attended the match, acknowledging their importance as the team’s 12th man.

“We’re happy that South Africans came in to support us. We hope to see them coming in numbers too in other games because they are the 12th man, that we are looking for.”

Bafana Bafana’s next fixtures in the group stage will be against Zimbabwe on Saturday and Mauritius on Tuesday.

With these upcoming matches, the team will aim to bounce back from their opening loss and make a strong impression in the tournament.
