Larsen Reveals AmaZulu Approach Before Vilakazi-Zwane Appointment

Former Magesi FC coach Clinton Larsen has revealed that he was approached by AmaZulu before they appointed the coaching duo of Vusi Vilakazi and Arthur Zwane.

When Usuthu parted ways with Pablo Franco Martin after they lost the first three league matches, Sportswire was informed that Larsen was wanted by Usuthu.

However, the stumbling block was that Larsen wanted to come with the technical team he had at Magesi and AmaZulu had to also negotiate with Magesi for him to be released as he had a contract.

Both parties could not agree and Larsen remained with Magesi, as Usuthu looked elsewhere to get Vilakazi and Zwane in.

“Yes, I was approached by the club and I met the club, talks went relatively well in my opinion,” said Larsen to MSW with Robert Marawa on Tuesday.

“I think the club was happy to be bringing me on board, but they were few issues. Firstly, contractually which eventually we seem to ironed out and then there were other issues that at Magesi with regards to my contract for me being released from my contract.

Larsen explained that resigning from Magesi was not as straightforward as it seemed. “It wasn’t all plain sailing in terms of just resigning and walking out, it was a lot more difficult than that,” he stated.

“Unfortunately, the deal didn’t materialize because I was really looking forward to going and try and help what I always have said – the sleeping giants in AmaZulu and that didn’t happen.”

Larsen, who guided Magesi FC to a stunning Carling Knockout Cup victory over Mamelodi Sundowns in November, subsequently resigned from his position in December following a loss to the Carling All Star team at Orlando Stadium.

“Since Vilakazi and Zwane have taken over, they’ve done a relatively good job, and the opportunity for me to join the club did not materialize,” Larsen continued. “But hopefully, in the future, an opportunity like that does present itself again because, like I said, it is an amazing club.

“When I was a young kid, I used to go at the age of 10, 12 years old and go watch teams like AmaZulu, like Bush Bucks with Professor Ngubane in Durban, the Joel Fayas of this world.

“But it didn’t happen to join them.”

When pressed about any regrets regarding the failed move, Larsen responded, “I don’t regret any decision I make in life,” he replied.

“This saying that everything happens for the reason, I live and die by it. It would have been nice if it happened and it would have really been a good move for me.

“It would have been second to Bloemfontein Celtic to be arguably the biggest club I coached in South Africa. So, it’s a missed opportunity. But, like I said, everything happens for the reason.

“I am at home doing some gardening at the moment and I will probably bounce back pretty soon.”

The door may not be entirely closed on a potential move to AmaZulu. With the contracts of Zwane and Vilakazi expiring at the end of the season, Larsen could be a potential candidate should the club decide to part ways with the current coaching staff.
