Mabasa Unfazed By Bafana Bafana Snub

Despite claiming the PSL Golden Boot with 16 goals, Orlando Pirates striker Tshegofatso Mabasa insists he’s not disappointed about being overlooked for the Bafana Bafana squad.

Mabasa enjoyed a stellar May, scoring five goals and earning the PSL Player of the Month award. However, his efforts weren’t enough to convince coach Hugo Broos, who will finalize his 23-man squad for the upcoming 2026 FIFA World Cup qualifiers against Nigeria and Zimbabwe on Thursday.

“Honestly, not really,” Mabasa responded when asked about his exclusion. “Every player aspires to represent the national team, but I believe if it’s meant to be, it will happen.”

Broos has a reputation for being inflexible. Initially, upon his appointment in May 2021, he excluded Themba Zwane due to his age. Zwane, however, continued to excel for Mamelodi Sundowns, even captaining them to league titles. Broos eventually relented, admitting Zwane’s importance and calling him back.

Mabasa draws inspiration from Zwane’s experience, believing his time will come too. “Look at Mshishi,” Mabasa said. “He wasn’t selected at first, but now he’s a regular call-up. So, I don’t dwell on it too much. Yes, I’ve been performing well, and if it’s destined to happen, it will. I’m not worried at all.”

Interestingly, Iqraam Rayners, Mabasa’s rivaly with 15 goals, and Evidence Makgopa were selected ahead of him for the Bafana Bafana squad. Mabasa was speaking in the Nedbank Cup build-up at Orlando Stadium on Tuesday as his side Pirates face Mamelodi Sundowns in the Ke Yona Cup final at Mbombela Stadium on Saturday (15:00).
