Pitso Mosimane expressed his deep disappointment after Abha FC’s relegation from the Saudi Pro League. The team’s final-day loss to Al Hazm confirmed their fate, despite a valiant fightback throughout the season.
Mosimane joined Abha in January with the specific task of avoiding relegation. While the team was already in a precarious position, Mosimane instilled hope with victories like the one against Al-Khaleej. Their efforts even saw them climb out of the relegation zone momentarily.
Abha ultimately fell short, with Mosimane acknowledging the heartbreak of such a close call. He commended his players for their unwavering commitment and fighting spirit throughout the challenging season.
Mosimane expressed his gratitude to the Abha club management and fans for their unwavering support. He emphasized the valuable lessons learned from this experience, which will undoubtedly benefit both him and his players in the future.
“It is incredibly disappointing to come so close and fall short,” said Mosimane in a statement issued by the agency that represents him, MT Sports.
“I am proud of how the players responded to the challenge and fought until the end. Their commitment and heart have been extraordinary and though we did not achieve our goal we can hold our heads high for the effort and progress made.
“Thank you to the Abha Club board, management and fans — they have been pillars of strength throughout this challenging season.
“The learnings from this experience will make us better coaches and players.”
With Abha’s relegation confirmed, Mosimane’s future remains unclear. Talks regarding his next move have already begun, with his short-term contract expiring in June. MT Sports, the agency representing Mosimane, released a statement highlighting his dedication and the team’s progress under his leadership.
“We are proud of coach Mosimane and his technical team for their unwavering dedication and tremendous effort this season,” Moira Tlhagale’s agent said.
“They were brave enough to take on a challenge that most would have steered clear of. Only missing out on survival by two points, the progress and spirit displayed by the team under coach Mosimane’s leadership has been inspiring.”
The season wasn’t without its setbacks, with Mosimane’s side suffering a demoralizing 8-0 defeat against Al-Nassir. This included a hat-trick from Cristiano Ronaldo, who eventually claimed the league’s top scorer title with a staggering 35 goals, becoming the first player to win four golden shoe award in four different countries.
