Magesi Edge Richards Bay To Reach Carling Knockout Final
Magesi FC, the newly-promoted side, secured a historic 1-0 victory over Richards Bay to advance to the Carling Knockout final at King Zwelithini Stadium on Saturday.
The match took a dramatic turn in the 84th minute when Richards Bay midfielder Tlakusani Mthethwa was sent off for a reckless challenge, leaving his team a man down.
This achievement marks a significant milestone for Magesi, who have been consistently impressive throughout the competition, winning all their matches away from home. Their promotion to the PSL last season has been followed by this remarkable cup run.
Coach Clinton Larsen, who previously won the Carling Knockout with Bloemfontein Celtic, has once again guided a team to the final. This is a second consecutive semi-final exit for Richards Bay, who suffered a similar fate last season.
The first half was a relatively balanced affair, with both teams creating limited scoring opportunities. Bay, playing at home, enjoyed more possession but struggled to break down Magesi’s defense.
However, it was Magesi who struck first. A defensive error by Tshepo Mabua allowed Tshepo Mashigo to pounce and score the opening goal in the 27th minute.
Magesi, despite being on the defensive for much of the game, remained dangerous on the counter-attack. Their well-organized defense, led by experienced players like Limbikani Mzava, Edmore Chirambandare, Deolin Mekoa, and Samuel Darpoh, frustrated Bay’s attacking efforts.
The Natal Rich Boyz pushed for an equalizer, with Keegan Allan coming close in the 68th minute. However, Magesi goalkeeper Elvis Chipezeze, a former Carling Knockout winner with Baroka FC, was in fine form and denied the home side’s attempts.
The first-half mistake by Mabua proved to be decisive, as Magesi held on to secure their place in the final. They will now face the winner of the Marumo Gallants vs. Mamelodi Sundowns semi-final at Toyota Stadium on 23 November.
The other semi-final between Gallants and Sundowns will be played at Dr Molemela Stadium on Sunday.
