McKenzie Reveals Broos Paid R16.8m As Mosimane Negotiations Stall
Sports, Arts and Culture Minister Gayton McKenzie confirmed to the National Assembly Portfolio Committee on Tuesday that former Bafana Bafana coach Hugo Broos was paid an annual salary of R16.8 million, up from his initial starting figure of R8 million when he took charge in May 2021.
The South African Football Association (SAFA) faced intense grilling from MPs over why Pitso Mosimane, earmarked to replace Broos, was offered a significantly lower salary than his Belgian predecessor.
Tensions flared during the hearing when SAFA CEO Lydia Monyepao refused to answer direct questions regarding technical salaries, citing confidentiality clauses. Her refusal prompted the committee chairperson to order her removal from the virtual meeting, while another committee member declared: “This is the cabal that we are talking about at SAFA, which lacks governance.”
SAFA delegates present—including Vice President Linda Zwane and NEC members Mxolisi Sibam and Bennet Bailey—were asked to clarify the figures put to Mosimane.
“It was reported in the NEC meeting that the initial offer of R5 million was not accepted by Pitso Mosimane. After extensive deliberation, it was agreed to offer R10 million,” Bailey explained. “What happened after that, I don’t know.”
When pressed on why Mosimane, a decorated coach with three CAF Champions League titles on his resume was offered less than Broos, SAFA officials initially remained silent for over a minute.
Sibam eventually requested that his senior, Zwane, address the matter.
Minister McKenzie then intervened to disclose Broos’s exact financial terms: “Hugo Broos was paid R16.8 million annually, which translates to roughly R1.4 million per month—excluding car, accommodation, and driver benefits. I want to put that in context so it cannot be said we are failing to answer the portfolio committee.”
Responding on behalf of SAFA, Zwane defended the association’s position:
“The NEC approved an offer of R10 million to Pitso Mosimane. I cannot speak on activities or preliminary talks prior to the NEC meeting, particularly regarding the R5 million figure. You will recall that Hugo Broos was initially paid R8 million, which grew during negotiations depending on the dynamics of those talks.”
Zwane added: “As a board, we are not directly involved in negotiations and may not be privy to the final outcome yet. However, once tax structures and other variables are included, the overall package could exceed R10 million. All I am saying is that the NEC can account for the R10 million put on the table.”
Bafana Bafana remain without a head coach following Broos’s departure in July, as Mosimane’s camp continues to negotiate over the proposed financial terms.
With 2027 Africa Cup of Nations qualifiers against Guinea and Eritrea looming next month, sources indicate that technical director Molefi Ntseki is under consideration to take charge on an interim basis.
Meanwhile, SAFA president Danny Jordaan was not available to the Portfolio Committee, where he sent a message to the CEO Monyepao and it was read as: “I’m at the doctor.”
