Princess Magogo Stadium Could Dictate Richards Bay vs Kaizer Chiefs
Richards Bay head coach Ronnie Gabriel believes hosting Kaizer Chiefs presents an ideal opportunity for his side to secure their first three points of the season.
The Natal Rich Boys, who are 11th in the table with two points after three matches, will entertain Amakhosi at KwaMashu’s compact Princess Magogo Stadium on Wednesday evening — a smaller venue that could play into the home side’s hands and frustrate their illustrious opponents.
The fixture was originally scheduled for the Umhlathuze Sports Complex in Richards Bay, but was relocated while the stadium surface undergoes maintenance. An alternative plan to stage the match at Moses Mabhida Stadium was also shelved due to ongoing refurbishment work at the 2010 World Cup venue.
Playing at Princess Magogo Stadium could favor Richards Bay, who are accustomed to tight, intimate surroundings.
Furthermore, Kaizer Chiefs have struggled at the KwaMashu ground in the past, suffering a defeat to Golden Arrows there during the 2022/23 season — their last appearance at the venue — as well as a loss in the 2017/18 campaign following the departure of former coach Steve Komphela.
With Chiefs more accustomed to expansive, high-capacity arenas, the venue shift could hand Richards Bay a crucial tactical edge against an Amakhosi side coming off a 1-1 draw against Mamelodi Sundowns at FNB Stadium two weeks ago.
“Preparations are on track heading into the Kaizer Chiefs match,” said Gabriel.
“We are looking forward to the encounter. Playing at home gives us an ideal opportunity to collect maximum points and move higher up the league standings.”
“We hope our home supporters will turn out in numbers to push us to victory. We respect Chiefs as a top-quality side, but we are fully prepared for the challenge.”
In their most recent league meeting in March, Richards Bay claimed a 1-0 victory at the Umhlathuze Sports Complex to avenge Chiefs’ 1-0 win in the reverse fixture at FNB Stadium earlier in the season.
