Mexico Secures Historic Knockout Spot With Gritty Win Over South Korea

Mexico has become the first nation to reach the 2026 FIFA World Cup knockout stages after grinding out a 1-0 victory over South Korea in the early hours of Friday morning at a vibrant Guadalajara Stadium.

Luis Romo emerged as the hero for the co-hosts, scoring the decisive goal to book El Tri’s spot in the newly expanded Round of 32.

A Slow Burn in Guadalajara

While a pre-match flyover set a fervent atmosphere above the stadium, the game itself took a while to mirror that energy, with clear-cut chances at a premium during a tense opening period.

However, Mexico signaled their intent early in the second half. Just four minutes after the restart, Jesús Gallardo sent a warning shot into the side-netting. A minute later, the stadium erupted. A costly miscommunication between Korean goalkeeper Kim Seung-gyu and defender Lee Ki-hyuk left a gaping target, allowing Romo to capitalize and prod the ball into an unguarded net.

Late-Game Heroics

Kim went some way toward atoning for his mistake in the 75th minute, standing tall to deny Raúl Jiménez from close range with a sensational reflex stop. Not to be outdone, his opposite number, Raúl Rangel, pulled off a scarcely believable double save to deny Cho Gue-sung and Yang Hyun-jun with just three minutes remaining, safely wrapping up the maximum points for Mexico.

Looking Ahead

With top spot in Group A firmly in the bag, Javier Aguirre’s side will head to Mexico City on June 30 to face a third-placed team from Group C, E, F, H, or I. The victory also marks a historic milestone for El Tri, who have now won three successive World Cup matches for the very first time.

Meanwhile, Bafana Bafana sit at the bottom of Group A following their 1-1 draw with the Czech Republic on Thursday night. Mexico will look to maintain their perfect record when they round out the group stage against the Czechs, while Bafana Bafana face a must-win final group match against South Korea in Monterrey on Thursday.
