Middendorp Leaves Durban City Again After Short Technical Director Stint
The relationship between Ernst Middendorp and Durban City FC has taken another twist, with the German coach stepping down once again.
Middendorp, who was in his second stint at the club as technical director, has departed just two months after returning to the role.
The former Kaizer Chiefs coach — who previously had four spells in charge of Maritzburg United before the club rebranded to Durban City at the start of last season — came back in December following the departure of Gavin Hunt.
He initially assumed the same technical director position at the start of the campaign, tasked with putting the necessary structures in place after City’s promotion to the PSL this season.
During Gavin Hunt’s tenure as head coach, it was suggested that the two had differing views. Middendorp was credited with bringing in players such as Trevor Mokwena and Terence Mashego, who is on loan from Mamelodi Sundowns.
However, Hunt was reportedly keen on reuniting with former players including Thulani Hlatshwayo and Craig Martin — a move that is believed to have left Middendorp unhappy.
This latest departure comes as a surprise, as Middendorp was seen leading training on Thursday morning and driving the club’s sponsored vehicle, BMW Supertech. Known for his punctuality, he is typically the first to arrive at training before the rest of the staff and players.
In a statement, the club confirmed his exit:
“Durban City FC confirms that Technical Director Ernst Middendorp has completed his short-term contract with the club, having fulfilled the specific mandate for which he was engaged.
“Middendorp rejoined Durban City FC on 15 December 2025. His brief focused on stabilising and strengthening the club’s technical structures during a period of transition, and that mandate has now been brought to its planned conclusion.
“The club thanks Ernst Middendorp for his professionalism and commitment during his time with us and wishes him success in his future endeavours.”
