Milford Maintains Top Spot, Spurs’ Woes Continue
Milford FC maintained their position and went four points clear at the top of the Motsepe Foundation Championship with a 1-0 win over Upington City at the Princess Magogo Stadium on Sunday afternoon.
Mandla Qhogi’s side opened the scoring through Sipho Ndlambi, who slotted home from the penalty spot, a strike that proved enough to claim maximum points and a third consecutive victory for the KZN side.
Meanwhile, Orbit College moved to second place with 19 points after seeing off Cape Town Spurs 2-0 at Olympia Park Stadium on Saturday, extending their winning streak to five games with 10 goals scored and one conceded.
Rounding up the top four is Durban City who turned the tide with a statement 5-2 thrashing of JDR Stars to move up to third, while Black Leopards slipped down to fourth on the table after a frustrating goalless draw against Kruger United at home.
For Spurs, a third successive defeat only piles on the misery as the Urban Warriors are enduring a sticky spell of a six-game winless run consisting of five losses and a draw, with only two goals scored in as many matches.
The Cape club is flirting with danger in 13th place, hovering above the relegation zone with nine points, level with 15th-placed Leruma United.
Overall Ernst Middendorp’s charges have won two opening 10 league outings. In the middle of the pack, newly promoted Highbury who struggled to register a win in the first seven matches of the campaign, continued their impressive run, easing 3-0 past Pretoria Callies at TUT stadium to make it three wins on the trot.
The Eastern Cape-based rookies ascended to ninth place, level on 12 points with Baroka FC as the Limpopo outfit bounced back to winnings ways with a comfortable 3-1 victory over struggling Leruma at Global Stadium on Saturday.
Elsewhere in the fight for survival, Venda FC remains rooted at the bottom of the second tier standings with eight points after sharing the spoils with the University of Pretoria in the capital city as the Vhembe-based side faces an uphill battle to avoid the axe.
On the other hand, Hungry Lions find themselves in the danger zone after dropping down to 12th place, level on points with relegation candidates after their match against Casric Stars was abandoned due to unpleasant weather conditions with Lions leading 1-0 on Friday afternoon.
