Motaung Demands Equal Stakes For Women’s Football After WAFCON Delay
Kaizer Chiefs Marketing and Commercial Director Jessica Motaung has called for women’s football to be treated with the same professional rigor as the men’s game following the postponement of the Women’s Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON).
Originally scheduled to kick off on 17 March, the continental showpiece has been pushed back to 25 July due to unforeseen circumstances.
Despite the delay, the tournament will remain in Morocco, a decision reaffirmed by CAF President Patrice Motsepe in Egypt earlier this week.
Speaking Tuesday at the official launch of the Kaizer Chiefs women’s team, Motaung emphasized the necessity of structural equality in African football.
“I think it’s unfortunate that the WAFCON has been postponed,” Motaung said. “But these things do happen, and I trust now that we’ll be able to stage it in calm times and do it well. It’s so important for women’s football to be taken seriously—for competitions to be at the highest level and to be held the same way they are for men.”
Motaung, who holds an influential role within CAF’s women’s football structures, signaled her intent to drive change from within. “Those are the things I will champion in the committee that I will sit in,” she added.
While the senior national stars await the July kickoff in Morocco, the newly launched Kaizer Chiefs ladies’ team will begin their journey in the Sasol League, South Africa’s women’s football second tier.
