Mothiba Joins Sundowns

Mamelodi Sundowns has officially signed Bafana Bafana striker Lebo Mothiba, reportedly on a contract until the end of the season.

Mothiba, who has undergone assessments by Sundowns on multiple occasions, has been a free agent since his departure from Strasbourg at the end of the previous season.

His time at Strasbourg was hampered by persistent injuries, ultimately leading former Arsenal captain Patrick Vieira to release him.

“He’s flown the South African flag overseas, and now Lebo Mothiba is here to add more forward firepower to Bafana Ba Style! Welcome to the home of the Champions, Lebo!” Sundowns announced in a statement.

Mothiba will compete for a starting position at Sundowns alongside Peter Shalulile, Tashreeq Matthews, Iqraam Rayners, and Arthur Sales. Sundowns currently leads the Betway Premiership table with 54 points after 20 matches, holding an 18-point advantage over second-placed Orlando Pirates, who have four games in hand.

The 29-year-old Mothiba, who has been recovering from a knee injury, last played a competitive match against Lorient in December 2023, coming on as a substitute for Kevin Gameiro.

Mothiba, who has also played for Lille and won the Coupe de la Ligue in France, has further experience with Valenciennes and Troyes.

He has scored four goals in 14 appearances for Bafana Bafana, but his last international appearance was in October 2023, in a friendly match against Ivory Coast.
