Motsepe Ends Uncertainty: Morocco Confirmed As WAFCON Hosts

CAIRO — CAF President Patrice Motsepe has reiterated that Morocco will remain the host nation for the upcoming Women’s Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON), ending months of speculation regarding a potential move to South Africa.
The tournament, originally scheduled for early 2026, was postponed to a July/August window.
The delay sparked rumors that Morocco might withdraw from hosting duties following the men’s national team’s controversial AFCON final loss to Senegal in January.
While South African Sports Minister Gayton McKenzie publicly expressed interest in stepping in as a replacement host, Motsepe silenced those rumors during a press conference in Cairo on Saturday.
“The WAFCON will take place in Morocco,” Motsepe stated firmly.
“No Favouritism” in African Football
Morocco’s dominance as a host has led to whispers of preferential treatment from CAF. However, the confederation issued a stern statement on Sunday dismissing these claims, emphasizing a commitment to governance and fairness.
“Under no circumstances will any Member Association be treated preferentially,” the statement read. CAF also noted that matters regarding the 2025 AFCON final are currently before the Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS), and the focus remains on the upcoming 2026 FIFA World Cup in North America.
Leadership Shake-up: Samson Adamu Steps In
In a major administrative shift, CAF Secretary General Veron Mosengo-Omba has stepped down from his role. Reports suggest the veteran administrator’s departure is related to age-related health considerations.
Samson Adamu, the current CAF Head of Competitions, has been appointed as the interim Secretary General. The Nigerian official takes the reins during a critical period as CAF prepares for a packed 2026 calendar.
