Msimango Embraces Competition As Chiefs Strengthen Backline
Kaizer Chiefs defender Given Msimango commends the acquisition of defensive figures in the squad, embracing the competition it invites for him as a defender.
During this ongoing transfer window, Amakhosi has acquired the services of four highly-rated defenders from both the local and international markets.
In August, the Soweto Giants announced the signings of former Orlando Pirates left-back, Bongani Sam along with the arrival of 22-year-old center-back Rashwin Dortly from Cape Town Spurs.
The Glamour boys then proceeded to later announce the signings of another two center-backs Angolan international, Inacio Miguel from Petro Luanda and Bradley Cross who once training with the club during the 2022 preseason.
The former TS Galaxy captain reiterated that the signing of so many defenders demonstrates the club’s intentions to not relive the previous seasons shortcomings, having conceded 30 goals in as many league games.
“For me, it just highlights the shortcomings of our previous season, as in defensively we did not do as well as we should have and them coming in is to try and improve on the defensive aspect of the game,” reflected the 27-year-old.
Msimango further acknowledged the quality of his incoming teammates and position competitors accepting the challenge as one of obligatory self-improvement.
“For me as an individual I look at it as an opportunity to get better, you know when quality players arrive it forces you to improve your game and improve as an individual. So, for me, it is an opportunity to do so,” asserted Msimango.
Having played a total of 27 in his first season at Amakhosi, the Brakpan-born defender was one of the most selected players in what was an ever-evolving squad.
Despite obtaining an abundance of game time, the Chiefs defender admitted that he suffered a difficult period at the club but insisted his arrival could not have come at a better time.
“Last season and even the previous season has been difficult for the club but when I came in I think for me it was a perfect time in my career to do so. Whatever transpired and whatever situation I went through in the club has only strengthened me and made me grow.”
In the process of a substandard season at the club, the defender garnered some individual success, earning himself a national team call-up, and representing the Amakhosi in the national team colors.
Msimango summed up his expectations for this season by saying, “So a lot of lessons were learned in that space and a lot of improvements were made and I am looking forward to this season and looking forward to what lies ahead and improved performances for me as an individual.”
Chiefs will start the 2024/25 Betway Premiership when they visit Marumo Gallants at Toyota Stadium on Saturday (15:00).
