Nabi Unsure Whether Ntwari Will Be Fit For Bay Game

Kaizer Chiefs coach Nasreddine Nabi has revealed that goalkeeper Fiacre Ntwari returned from international duty injured and his availability for Wednesday’s match against Richards Bay at Peter Mokaba Stadium is uncertain.

Ntwari sustained an injury during Rwanda’s 2025 Africa Cup of Nations qualifier against Nigeria during the international break, forcing him off the field in the 69th minute. Although Rwanda secured a victory, it was insufficient to qualify for the tournament as Nigeria had already clinched their spot alongside Benin.

“It is true that Ntwari came back from the national team slightly injured,” Nabi confirmed.

“But he started training on Sunday and the day before. Between the three goalkeepers, it’s open. We need not the fight, but the competitiveness.

“The competition between the three is open and we are going to make the best decision based on the best performance.”

The 25-year-old, who joined Chiefs from TS Galaxy during the off-season on a contract until 2028, last featured for the club in the 4-0 Carling Knockout Cup semifinal defeat to Mamelodi Sundowns earlier this month. Fans have called for his substitution, as Nabi has other options to choose from between Brandon Petersen or Bruce Bvuma.

Ntwari has recorded just one clean sheet in seven appearances, conceding 11 goals.

Chiefs, when they host Brandon Truter’s side, will be looking to end a three-match winless streak in all competition at Peter Mokaba Stadium, their alternative venue.

Both teams were eliminated from the Carling Knockout Cup semifinals, with Bay surprisingly losing to Magesi FC, who subsequently upset Sundowns in the final.

Nabi is wary of Bay, who have struggled this season with only one win in seven matches, scoring one goal and conceding four.

“I think the game is a tough match because the situation is not very good for the opponents,” said Nabi.

“I know the team will prepare well and not only because they are playing against Kaizer Chiefs, but the situation for them is difficult.

“I’m sure 100 percent my team will give 200 percent to get the good results and I’m prepared mentally my players and this game is not going to be easy.

“All the games are not easy, particularly this game because the opponents need positive results. But we don’t have another choice, we need to give 200 percent, Kaizer Chiefs need good results.

“And we will go to Polokwane with a big morale and with respect to the opponent.”
