Nkota’s Masterclass Sparks Bafana’s Win Over Mozambique
Bafana Bafana secured a convincing 2-0 victory over Mozambique in an international friendly match at the New Peter Mokaba Stadium on Tuesday evening.
This win follows a 0-0 draw against Tanzania on Friday at the same venue, and it marked a significant boost for the team as they gear up for crucial FIFA World Cup qualifiers and the Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON).
From the onset, Bafana Bafana asserted their dominance, creating several scoring opportunities in the first 10 minutes.
Mohau Nkota, Relebohile Mofokeng, and Kwayiba all had notable chances, but Mozambique’s goalkeeper, Ivane Urrubal, stood tall with three impressive saves.
Despite their best efforts, Bafana struggled to find the back of the net, with Mofokeng and Kwayiba both failing to capitalize on clear opportunities.
The first half ended goalless, with Urrubal having made a string of remarkable saves to deny the home side.
The second half saw Bafana Bafana maintain their intensity, and it paid off in the 46th minute when Kwayiba headed home from Nkota’s pinpoint corner kick.
The hosts continued to press, with Yanela Mbuthuma getting a goal disallowed for offside in the 54th minute.
As the game wore on, coach Hugo Broos introduced Renaldo Leaner, Oswin Appollis, and Cupido, who made an immediate impact.
Ashley Cupido scored a clinical goal in the 69th minute, capitalizing on a defensive error by Edmilson Dove, with Nkota providing the assist for the second time in the match.
Bafana Bafana continued to create chances, with Kwayiba and Nkota both coming close to scoring.
However, Mozambique finally managed to create a scoring opportunity of their own in the 88th minute through Shaquille Nangy, but Leaner made a crucial save to preserve the clean sheet.
This 2-0 win is a vital confidence booster for Bafana Bafana as they prepare for a busy September and October schedule, which includes FIFA World Cup qualifiers against Lesotho, Nigeria, Rwanda, and Zimbabwe.
The team will then shift its focus to the AFCON, scheduled for December.
But Nkota’s performance was a highlight of the match, with his corner kick setting up the opening goal and his assist for Cupido’s goal. His influence on the game was undeniable, and he will look to continue his form in the upcoming fixtures.
With this win, Bafana Bafana have sent a strong message to their competitors, and fans can expect more exciting performances from the team shortly.
