Nwabali Saves Salah’s Penalty As Nigeria Claim Bronze

Stanley Nwabali was a star of the show as he saved the penalties of Mohamed Salah and Omar Marmoush to help Nigeria win the bronze medal in the Africa Cup of Nations, defeating Egypt 4-2 at Mohamed V Stadium on Saturday.

Nigeria was looking to secure its ninth bronze medal, while Egypt aimed to win the bronze for the fourth time in the AFCON.

This match marked the 10th meeting between the two sides in the AFCON, and the second knockout stage game, following eight previous encounters in the group stage.

The Super Eagles also came to this game having lost to host nation Morocco 4-2 in a penalty shootout of the semifinal after the game ended 0-0 in regular and extra time. Egypt, on the other hand, was eliminated by Senegal with a 1-0 defeat, courtesy of Sadio Mane’s 78th-minute goal

The game kicked off at a frenetic pace, with the Super Eagles dominating the first 20 minutes and creating several scoring opportunities. However, despite their dominance, they failed to capitalize on their chances, and the game remained goalless.

The Pharaohs had their first significant chance of the game in the 27th minute, when Mohamed Salah unleashed a left-footed shot from the right side of the six-yard box. Nigeria’s goalkeeper, Stanley Nwabali, made a crucial save, diving to his right to palm the ball away from the bottom right corner.

Just nine minutes later, Nigeria thought they had taken the lead when Akor Adams scored with a header from close range. However, the Video Assistant Referee (VAR) intervened and ruled out the goal for a foul, denying the Super Eagles a crucial advantage.

As the first half drew to a close, both teams were still searching for the opening goal, and the score remained 0-0 at halftime.

Nigeria dominated the second half, creating numerous scoring opportunities, including one goal that was disallowed due to offside.

Despite their relentless attacks and impressive forward passes, the team couldn’t break the deadlock, with Egypt’s defense putting up a strong resistance.

The match ultimately ended 0-0, with Nigeria triumphing 4-2 in the penalty shootout.

The AFCON will conclude on Sunday with the final match between host nation Morocco and Senegal at the Prince Moulay Abdellah Stadium in Rabat, kicking off at 21:00.

Morocco, buoyed by home advantage, will be seeking to claim their first AFCON title since 1976, while Senegal aims to lift the trophy for a second time, having won it in 2021.
