Chiefs vs. Siwelele Shifted To Moses Mabhida Stadium
Moses Mabhida Stadium has been confirmed as the host venue for Kaizer Chiefs’ Betway Premiership clash against Siwelele on 2 September.
The fixture was originally moved to Royal Bafokeng Stadium in Phokeng because FNB Stadium is unavailable due to the Springboks hosting the All Blacks next weekend.
However, the game has now been redirected to Durban as Chiefs retain home venue rights as part of their partnership with the eThekwini Municipality.
Ahead of their 2-2 draw with Richards Bay at Princess Magogo Stadium on Wednesday, Chiefs teased the move by sharing pitch footage from Moses Mabhida on social media. That match was originally scheduled for the 2010 World Cup venue, but was moved to KwaMashu while the main stadium underwent multi-million-rand redevelopment.
Chiefs received firm assurances from stadium management during meetings with the city, prompting them to bring the Siwelele fixture to Durban.
Moses Mabhida Stadium has not hosted a single football match this season due to the ongoing precinct upgrades. The venue’s playing surface has been a persistent concern, with the city facing criticism for nearly five years over a pitch that frequently appears brown and sandy on television.
Unlike Johannesburg venues managed by private stadium management companies, Durban’s stadiums are owned directly by the eThekwini Municipality. Critics argue that municipal oversight lacks the specialized turf management expertise offered by private operators, leading to calls for the city to tender out pitch maintenance.
